James qualified as a solicitor in 1995 with City of London law firm, Wilde Sapte (now Dentons), subsequently returning to his native North East of England, where he has worked for a number of prominent firms. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Local Government Law and Practice and a Masters Degree in Advanced Commercial Property from Northumbria University.

Areas of practice:

Having trained at a firm known for its banking expertise, James has an excellent perspective on secured lending, corporate finance and insolvency matters and their application to commercial property transactions.

He has extensive experience in all areas of commercial property work, including acquisitions, disposals, leasing, financing and the property aspects of corporate transactions.

James also deals with the sale and purchase of businesses on an asset basis.

He has a broad client base ranging from corporate and individual clients, to landed estate owners, charities, pension trustees and farmers and their partnerships.

Recent matters:

  • Acting in the assembly and sale of a development site to an international retail company for £2.1 million
  • Grant of an option for a lease over agricultural land, which, if exercised, will be used for the purposes of constructing a solar farm
  • Sale of mines and minerals held by a registered charity
  • Acting on behalf of a landowner in relation to the compulsory purchase of their land by Highways England, including matters relating to the compensation payable and the creation of a private means of access from the newly created highway
  • Advising on the property aspects of the dissolution of a farming partnership
